What is the Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) Designation and Why is it Important For Seniors?

Whether you’re a maturing senior or assisting your parents with a real estate transaction, SRES® designees have unparalleled training and experience in Seniors real estate.

For one thing: 20% of Florida’s population is 65 or older. That’s over 4  million Floridians.

The REALTOR® with an SRES® designation brings valuable insight into the unique home buying and selling needs of Florida Seniors.

It’s one thing to be an experienced, successful REALTOR®. Knowing the demographics and psychographics of your clientele is another thing altogether. The SRES® designation for real estate professionals came from a clear need to better serve the interests of over 4 million current and future Florida Seniors. Hence, the SRES® Mission, Vision, and History reads,

“Since 2007, Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) designees have been helping maturing Americans with their needs. As a part of the National Association of REALTORS® family of designations, the SRES® designation is conferred to REALTORS® who complete in-depth training in a wide variety of topics related to homebuyers and sellers over the age of 50, including:

  • Senior housing options—from active adult communities to aging in place
  • Reverse mortgages
  • Downsizing and rightsizing
  • Using pensions, 401(k) accounts, and IRAs in real estate transactions

The mission of the SRES® Council is to promote member success by providing high quality training and tools necessary to position the SRES® designee as the trusted real estate resource for the senior market.

Our vision is to create a community of REALTORS® and related professionals dedicated to serving the real estate needs of senior consumers.”

There are many factors impacting the decisions you make when buying or selling a home. These factors evolve throughout your lifetime. Your need for a big backyard and good schools for the kids gave way to a smaller home with the lower maintenance of an empty nest.

You’ve heard the old saying about walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. Well, think of the REALTOR® with the SRES® designation as one who did just that and brings all that intuition and more to the conversation of buying or selling a home. Understanding those unique, individual needs, care-abouts and concerns is the essence of the SRES professional.

Why work with an SRES®?

Whether you’re a maturing senior or assisting your parents with a real estate transaction, SRES® designees have unparalleled training and experience in Seniors real estate, including:

  • Helping manage the financial and emotional challenges of selling a long-held family home

  • Exercising the necessary care, diligence and sensitivity needed in the understandably disruptive process of selling a home
  • Comprehending a unique set of needs and creating a customized plan to ensure a home purchase meets those needs now and in the future
  • Sharing specialized knowledge in reverse mortgages, 401(k) accounts, and IRAs for a real estate transaction
  • Seamlessly integrating support resources from a vast network of movers, attorneys, home inspectors, and other experts into the process
  • Counseling Seniors on Aging In Place
